Department Council

Duties and Responsibilities
  1. The Department Council is the management and planning body of the Department.
  2. Pursuant to Article 29 of the University Statutes, the Council exercises the following duties:

a) Sets general criteria for the use of funds allocated to the Department.
b) Sets criteria for the use of resources and spaces allocated to the Department.
c) Approves, upon the Director’s proposal, the use of financial resources allocated to the Administration or acquired from third parties.
d) Proposes, in compliance with University Regulations, the Department Regulations to be approved by the Academic Senate, subject to the favorable opinion of the Board of Directors.
e) Proposes—in accordance with the procedures established by the Regulations and any guidelines from the Faculty—the selection and recruitment of professors to be submitted for the opinion of the Academic Senate and the resolution of the Board of Directors; it also proposes the selection and hiring of fixed-term researchers;
f) Approves the Department’s educational offering plan and the course catalogue (Manifesto degli Studi) in accordance with those proposed by the Faculty;
g) Deliberates on the assignment of teaching responsibilities to Department faculty and on the coverage of all activated courses, under the coordination of the Faculty;
h) Generally supervises the proper functioning and quality of teaching and research activities.
i) Approves triennial reports on scientific activity and provides opinions on the teaching activity of the faculty.
l) Provides opinions on leaves of absence for study or scientific research purposes.
m) Promotes the internationalization of the educational offering and research.
n) Manages the premises (regarding non-structural parts), inventory assets, and Department services based on criteria of functionality and cost-effectiveness, in compliance with workplace health and safety regulations.
o) Proposes the activation and deactivation of research and service structures under its jurisdiction.
p) Annually prepares and submits to the Faculty for an advisory opinion its programmatic guidelines regarding teaching, as well as recruitment proposals.

  1. The Council also deliberates on all other duties assigned to it by current laws, the Statutes, and Regulations.
  2. For resolutions relating to points e) and f), the composition is limited to personnel of the corresponding or higher rank, and resolutions are adopted by an absolute majority of those entitled to vote.
 
Composition
  1. The Department Council is composed of:

a. The Director, who convenes and chairs it.
b. The professors and researchers affiliated with the Department.
c. A representation of the technical-administrative staff equal to one-third of said staff, up to a maximum of one-sixth of the personnel referred to in letters a) and b).
d. Student representatives enrolled in the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs affiliated with the Department.
e. One representative of students enrolled in the PhD programs affiliated with the Department;
f. The Administrative Manager, who also serves as the Recording Secretary.
g. One representative of contract professors and research fellows (assegnisti di ricerca), without voting rights.

  1. The total number of representatives referred to in letters d) and e) is equal to 15% of the professors and researchers serving on the Department Council (including one PhD student), with rounding down for fractions less than five and rounding up for fractions equal to or greater than five.
  2. The term of office for representatives on the Department Council is three academic years, with the exception of student representatives, whose term is two years.
  3. All representative mandates are renewable only once.
