Interconnections between Mathematics and Art, Mathematics Outreach

Description

In this area, the research carried out concerns the relationships between mathematics, literature and the arts, and is developed with a focus on the use of specific mathematical techniques as tools for analysing works of art (paintings, poetic texts). The parameters thus obtained are also explored as prompts for the composition of musical pieces. This line of research is also connected to public engagement, and in particular to a rethinking of how mathematics is represented in the collective imagination. By highlighting its elements of creativity and moments of ‘crisis’, the aim is to help dismantle deep-rooted and harmful prejudices about mathematics, and ultimately to encourage more girls and young women to take up the study of STEM subjects.
