Mathematics Education

Description

Research in Mathematics Education is mainly oriented towards the integration of technologies into teaching and learning processes, both at school and university level. This line of research is motivated by the observation of difficulties that students encounter—especially when entering university—which are not only cognitive in nature but also organizational and psychological.

From a theoretical perspective, the main research themes include:

  • the school-to-university transition;
  • the individualization of teaching and learning pathways;
  • scaffolding strategies in digital environments;
  • the management of multiple representations of mathematical objects and the link between representation and meaning.

The expected outcomes are multiple: for university lecturers, who can monitor students’ work and learning progress and make use of assessment tools, including automated assessment; for students, who can develop their knowledge in a more active and personalized way through interaction with digital learning pathways and materials; and for the university institution, which can capitalise on these teaching approaches also with a view to reducing student drop-out rates.
